Part of the fun of traveling is finding unique hotels. This Unique Commercial post focuses on less-than-common characteristics of hotels all around the globe.
Saugerties Lighthouse – Saugerties, New York, USA
Constructed in 1869, the Saugerties Lighthouse was originally intended to give navigational aid as sea bearing vessels approached the mouth of the Esopus Creek on the Hudson River in New York. In 1954 the lighthouse usage was ceased and the building was neglected until the late 1970s when the townspeople formed a committee to restore the lighthouse to its original state. In 2011 it was reopened as an operating Bed and Breakfast and museum.
The Greenbrier – White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, USA
The Pottery Hotel – Yeongheung Island, South Korea
With little information (and certainly none in English), there is a lot to wonder about this unique 6 ‘vase’ hotel in South Korea. Giant painted pottery holds each hotel room.
Tavarua Island Resort – Tavarua, Fiji
Everyone knows the first three rules of real estate: 1) location. 2) location. 3) location. While the 15 cabins on this tiny island in the south Pacific can easily be described as “rustic and basic,” you have to remember the bigger picture… you’re on a heart shaped island in paradise! This is a popular spot with surfers and adventure travelers.
Le Grotte Della Civita – Matera, Italy
This is literally the opposite of a commercial building. This hotel is built into a naturally existing cave in Northern Italy. Consisting of 18 cave rooms (as well as a restaurant) it fits perfectly into the UNESCO-listed town of Matera which plays host to a variety of other gorge dwellings. It’s rustic appearance is comfortable but luckily, each room has WiFi.
Hotel Unique – Sao Paulo, Brazil
Self described as “an urban work of art” this unique hotel boasts visually refreshing architecture to blend gastronomy, architecture, art, fashion, music, and exquisite service. It’s boat like shape gives way to beautiful curves allowing for large windows and plenty of natural light.
Hotel Americano – New York, New York, USA
Situated in the up-and-coming Chelsea neighborhood, Hotel Americano hardly blends in to its surroundings. Loud and notable are two words that might jump to mind when describing the Hotel Americano and its signature metallic lattice façade juxtaposing it’s mid century modern interior.
The Opposite House Beijing – Beijing, China
The Opposite House is named not for its modernity, but for its juxtaposition of traditional and modern; adjacent to the hotel is a traditional Chinese courtyard guest house. The striking green glass exterior may scream modern, but with natural roots: the pattern of the glass is inspired by traditional Chinese wood lattice work. Equally stunning interior is designed as a large seamless space with a vibrant mix of modern and traditional with a large central atrium.
